The Act of Renunciation (May 4, 1776)
On May 4, 1776, Rhode Island became the first of the American colonies to formally renounce its allegiance to King George III and Great Britain. Adopted by the General Assembly meeting in Newport, the Act of Renunciation removed the King’s name and authority from all official oaths, commissions, and legal documents, asserting that Rhode Island would govern itself as a free and independent colony.
