April 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of George Washington’s 1776 visit to Rhode Island. To recognize this historic anniversary, the Rhode Island Historical Society will host living historians who portray George and Martha Washington on Saturday, April 4, 2026, from 10am-1pm at the John Brown House Museum, along with a variety of fun historical activities.

Engage with the Washingtons as they recount life in 1776, just months before the signing of the Declaration of Independence. George and Martha will share highlights of letters exchanged and descriptions of Washington’s visit to Providence, including his “polite invitation” from the governor.

During the museum’s open hours, from 10am-4pm, young visitors can write a letter with a quill and ink, and historically inspired children’s crafts will be available.

Admission to the John Brown House Museum is free thanks to generous support from the Rhode Island 250 Commission. Donations are welcome. Advance registration is requested.
