Smith’s Castle invites the public to participate in our Opening Day on May 2, 2026, from 11:00 – 4:00 p.m. which will feature talks, demonstrations and exhibits that will ask visitors to Reimagine the Revolution in Rhode Island.

Public historian Robert A. Geake will speak on “Were the Updike’s Loyalists?” centering on the accusations against the family and other incidents that led to the formation of the Wickford Rangers to “ferret out the Tories” in what was still called “Updike’s Newtown.”

The day will also feature Michael LePage as John Adams and his discourse on “John Adams and the Road to Independence.”

The day will also feature reenactors from the Varnum Continentals, The Kingston Reds, and Pawtucket Rangers who will provide demonstrations of military drills and firearms, children’s games and crafts, an exhibit on Celebrations of the Revolution in past anniversary’s, and tours of the historic house museum which are free on Opening Day.
