Selective Service System
Program Description:
The Selective Service System’s primary mission in peacetime is to register men, ages 18-25, and maintain a system of conscription that, when authorized by the President and Congress, rapidly provides personnel in a fair and equitable manner while managing an alternative-service program for conscientious objectors.
Agency Vision: To be a trusted, actively engaged national defense partner and the sole source of conscripted talent for national security in the event of a national emergency. We also support the Department of Defense’s recruiting efforts to maintain a strong all-volunteer force.
We support Veterans who failed to register with the Selective Service who served as active duty members of the U.S. armed forces with information on how to secure federal employment and to gain security clearances. See here: https://www.sss.gov/register/veterans/
Finally, approximately 62 percent of the Selective Service workforce is comprised of veterans. Many who serve as State Directors in states across the nation.
Eligibility:
The Selective Service System does not directly provide services to veterans. Your agency’s willingness to share a link to our website would assist those veterans with instructions on what to do to protect their access to federal and some state jobs and the ability to secure security clearances. Your support in this area would also help increase awareness among your visitors of the requirement for young men to register with Selective Service.
